#IGWritersMay - Day 17 - Inspiration

#IGWritersMay is an Instagram hashtag for writers to share their tips and experiences throughout the month, focusing on one topic each day. Created by Cheyanne Young (Instagram @NormalChey), YA author who's working on The Last Wish of Sasha Cade coming Fall 2018.

For Day 17, "Inspiration," what came to mind was how movies inspired me to write my own stories. I looked for the small details, things I could imagine the director saying to the actors or actresses on how to say certain things coupled with camera angle and distance. I enjoyed observing dialogue and the meaning behind each word or sentence, and not just for its face value. When it comes to science fiction films, I enjoyed being wowed by the visual effects and appreciated the efforts of digital teams working endless days to get technology to create a new world.

It's all of these elements that inspire me to imagine and dream of what it would be like to one day create a story and have it come to life through a movie. With the recent Marvel, DC Comics, and Disney films released in the last two years, I believe we have the capability of simulating the world and technology featured in Variance. I just hope that if this dream does come true, that all of the right factors, whether it's the production team, the screenwriters and the story adaptation, the actors and actresses, the visual arts teams, the locations, and the budget, are in Variance's favor for the film to be a success. Because we all know of terrible science fiction movies where one or more of those elements were overlooked, substandard, or totally different from the original story, and we also know great science fiction movies that didn't receive the praise and popularity that they deserved. Nevertheless, like reading, movies will continue to inspire me to write.

Here's my social media post for Day 17:

Catching up with #IGWritersMay to share #writerslife, and I'm always late! Day 17's topic is #Inspiration. Like book reading, watching movies for its artistic direction and screenplay is what inspires me to write my own stories, and it's the small details that I look for that I can incorporate into my work. It's the subtleties or key actions that people say or do, the emotional connections with unique characteristics, and in the sci-fi genre, the cool visual effects that help #inspire me. I hope one day my book is adapted for a movie.
