#IGWritersMay is an Instagram hashtag for writers to share their tips and experiences throughout the month, focusing on one topic each day. Created by Cheyanne Young (Instagram @NormalChey), YA author who's working on The Last Wish of Sasha Cade coming Fall 2018.
For Day 15, "Author Headshot," writers are supposed to show their best picture, one with twinkling pearly whites, dressed in the best outfit from the closet, artistically faded background, and perfect complexion. As much as I wanted to go and spend some dough on a professional photographer, I tapped into a local, inexpensive resource--my 6 year old daughter. At first, I tried to prop the camera on a bunch of chairs and take the picture. But then my daughter saw what I was doing and insisted that she take the picture.
At first I thought, "Oh man, this is going to take forever." After thinking about how this picture will be printed in every single one of my books, I figured it would be a great idea to give her the photo credit. I taught her how to position my head (even drew a rectangle on a piece of paper and an oval for my head inside it), aim the focus points at the right spot, stabilize herself, and align the shot with the picture frames in the back. After about 10 shots, she managed to capture the image below.
It was well worth it when we received the author's hardcover copy of Variance, the first ever to be printed on demand and she was proud of herself. This moment will be remembered forever. A picture might be worth a thousand words, but the moment taking the photo and my daughter seeing it published was priceless.

This post is for #IGWritersMay to share #writerslife . Day 15's topic is Author Headshot. What makes this pic special is that my 6 year-old daughter took this picture while standing on a sturdy chair. I had to give her lessons on how to focus, what the focus pints are, where to position my head, how to stay still, etc. After about 10 shots, I decided to settle on this one for my first novel. It's awesome to be able to give photo credit to my daughter and to see her reaction when she saw the picture in the first ever printed hardcover copy. • #writersofinstagram #amwriting #authorsofinstagram #writingcommunity #bookstagram #bookworm #booknerd #bookaholic #SciFi #booklove #scifi #writing #write #writer #variance #author #headshot #raiseyourweapon
